THE INTRODUCTION
The student entered the studio and found a white canvas waiting before him.
The teacher placed ten colors upon the table.
Then he asked:
What is the color of the Arab world?
The student reached toward the color of the desert.
But the sea rose within the canvas and said:
Where is my color?
He selected the color of cities.
The village objected:
Have I been left outside the story?
He added the color of home.
Then another house appeared, existing only in memory.
Migration appeared.
Return.
Family.
The body.
Language.
Landscape.
Old photographs.
And cities changing faster than memory can preserve them.
The student attempted to gather everything within a single image.
The canvas became crowded and silent.
The canvas told him:
You are not painting me.
You are collecting symbols you believe others expect to see.
The student stepped back and asked:
How do I create an image of my world without reducing it?
The teacher replied:
I will not give you an answer.
I will give you ten different ways of seeing.
The student opened his notebook.
And the journey began.
SESSION ONE
TAREK AL-GHOUSSEIN
THE SILENT FIGURE WITHIN THE LANDSCAPE
The student saw a solitary body within a vast landscape.
The human figure appeared small before sea, desert, architecture, and city.
Yet that presence became the greatest question within the image.
Who is this person?
Does he belong to this place?
Is he arriving?
Is he leaving?
Is he waiting for someone?
Or is the landscape itself watching him?
The body remained still.
Yet its stillness carried an entire story of identity, place, displacement, and presence.
The student wrote:
The body does not always need to move in order to tell a story.
Sometimes it is enough to stand alone in the wrong place or in the place from which it has been separated.
SESSION TWO
KHALED BARAKA
MIGRATION, MEMORY, AND MOVING BORDERS
An open suitcase appeared before the student.
The teacher told him:
Place inside it everything a person needs when leaving home.
The student placed clothing inside.
Photographs.
Documents.
And a few small objects.
Memory refused to enter.
Half of language remained outside.
The house was too large to be folded.
Through Khaled Barakeh’s practice, students examine how images, objects, installation, and conceptual strategies can address migration, borders, identity, belonging, and social transformation.
The suitcase said:
A person may cross a border once.
But the border may continue living inside them for years.
The student wrote:
What we carry into exile is not always what can be placed inside a suitcase.
SESSION THREE
YASMINE NASSER DIAZ
FAMILY, WOMANHOOD, AND YEMENI-AMERICAN IDENTITY
The student entered a small room.
He found clothing, family photographs, voices, memories, and questions rarely spoken aloud.
The room was small.
Yet an immense history lived within it.
Through Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s work, students approach home, family, womanhood, culture, and life between different worlds.
They learn that a personal story does not always remain private.
A single room may reveal larger questions about community, gender, expectation, and belonging.
The room asked the student:
Are you the person you know within yourself?
Or the person your family and community expect you to become?
The student wrote:
Sometimes the greatest questions of identity begin inside the smallest rooms.
SESSION FOUR
ZEINAB ALHASHEMI
WHEN THE DESERT BECOMES PART OF THE ARTWORK
The student left the gallery.
He did not find the artwork hanging upon a wall.
The artwork was waiting within the desert.
It changed with the morning light.
Its shadow lengthened toward evening.
Its scale shifted whenever the student approached or moved away.
Students investigate relationships among artwork, site, environment, material, geometry, and scale.
They understood that the desert was not an empty background into which the artwork had been placed.
It was a collaborator in its creation.
The desert said:
Do not place art upon me and then forget me.
Listen to my light, distance, wind, and memory.
The student wrote:
In site-specific art, land becomes material, light becomes color, and distance becomes part of the composition.
SESSION FIVE
AHMED EMAD ELDIN
WHEN THE DIGITAL IMAGE BECOMES A DOORWAY TO IMAGINATION
The student entered a world whose elements seemed familiar.
A sky.
A city.
A body.
A road.
Yet their scale, relationships, and perspective did not belong to reality.
Photography, light, atmosphere, perspective, and digital tools came together to create a world both familiar and impossible.
The student asked the computer:
Can you create imagination?
It replied:
I can execute thousands of possibilities.
But I cannot give an image a reason to deserve existence.
Students learn that technical skill alone does not create meaningful art.
The tool constructs the image.
The artist gives it idea, necessity, and human spirit.
The student wrote:
Technology should expand imagination, not replace it.
SESSION SIX
NASSER ALMULHIM
WHEN COLOR BECOMES AN INNER LANGUAGE
The student searched for a face.
He found none.
He searched for a house, tree, or city.
He found only color, line, surface, movement, and rhythm.
قال:
He said:
I do not know what this painting represents.
Color replied:
Perhaps I do not represent anything you can see outside yourself.
Perhaps I give a body to something within you that words cannot name.
Students learn to enter abstraction without forcing it to become a literal story.
They study color, gesture, texture, rhythm, and relationships between fields.
The student wrote:
Some things within us cannot be painted realistically.
Abstraction gives them another kind of body.
SESSION SEVEN
MAITHA ABDALLA
HERITAGE, PERFORMANCE, AND CONTEMPORARY IDENTITY
The artist entered an old story.
She did not enter merely to repeat it as it had been inherited.
She carried her body, questions, and contemporary time into it.
Students examine relationships among heritage, identity, performance, material, symbolism, and storytelling.
The student asked heritage:
Must I preserve you exactly as you are?
It replied:
If you imprison me within the past, I will become a silent artifact.
Question me again.
Allow me to encounter your time.
And accept responsibility for the answer.
The student wrote:
Heritage is not a collection of instructions left by previous generations.
It is a question each generation answers differently.
SESSION EIGHT
ALYAMAH RASHED
THE BODY, DREAMS, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SPACE
A body appeared within the painting.
It was not a body as seen in a mirror.
It stretched, transformed, and floated between reality and dream.
It became anxiety.
Memory.
And a being inhabiting the human interior.
Students examine how exaggeration, distortion, color, and space can make invisible psychological states visible.
The body said:
Do not paint me as I appear from outside.
Paint the way I feel from within.
The student wrote:
The body in a painting may become a psychological place, not merely an anatomical form.
SESSION NINE
HASHEL AL LAMKI
NATURE, MEMORY, AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
The student returned to the land.
This time, he did not see it as beautiful scenery.
He saw a living system capable of change, pain, and memory.
Students investigate relationships among nature, material, color, human presence, and environmental consciousness.
The tree asked:
How many times have you passed me without seeing me?
How often have you drawn me as decoration rather than as life upon which your own life depends?
The student learned that an artist may represent the land not merely so that we can see it, but so that we remember our responsibility toward it.
He wrote:
When art restores our attention to nature, looking becomes an ethical act.
SESSION TEN
SOUSAN ALBAHAR
DRAWING, ARCHIVE, AND THE MEMORY OF PLACE
In the final room, the student found fragments of the past.
A photograph.
A document.
A name.
An architectural detail.
And an empty space left by something altered or lost.
Students investigate how drawing, archives, photographs, and documents can reconstruct a relationship with a city, home, or landscape that has changed.
The archive said:
I will not give you the entire past.
I will give you the fragments that survived.
You must not pretend the missing parts do not exist.
The artist gathered the fragments.
Not to reconstruct the past exactly as it was.
But to ask why it continues living within us.
The student wrote:
The archive does not restore time.
It prevents its complete disappearance.
THE VISUAL LANGUAGE LAB
After studying each artist, students do not stop at the question:
Do I like this artwork?
Instead, they ask:
What did I notice first?
What medium is being used?
How is color functioning?
What does scale accomplish?
Is there a body, landscape, or architectural space?
Is memory or narrative present?
How does the artist’s personal experience relate to the work?
How does the work connect to culture, society, and environment?
What can be documented as fact?
What am I personally interpreting?
They then reach the most important question:
WHAT VISUAL DECISION MAKES THIS ARTIST’S LANGUAGE DISTINCTIVE?
Students learn that style is not an attractive appearance to be copied.
Style is a sequence of decisions.
What do we reveal?
What do we remove?
Where do we place the body?
What is the scale of the image?
Which material do we choose?
What distance do we create between the work and the viewer?
THE FINAL PROJECT
MY PALETTE, MY VOICE
After encountering the ten artists, each student selects a subject connected to personal experience or interest.
Home.
Family.
City.
Migration.
Nature.
Body.
Memory.
Heritage.
Future.
Belonging.
The student develops an original work through painting, drawing, photography, collage, digital art, installation, short video, or conceptual practice.
There is one essential rule:
DO NOT IMITATE YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST.
Learn how the artist discovered a language.
Then begin searching for your own.
The final work is accompanied by a short artist statement addressing:
What is my idea?
Why did I choose this medium?
How does form relate to meaning?
What comes from my own memory and experience?
What do I want to leave inside the viewer’s memory?
WHAT STUDENTS TAKE WITH THEM
Students encounter ten contemporary artistic practices and a wide range of approaches.
Painting.
Abstraction.
Photography.
Digital art.
Installation.
Performance.
Site-specific art.
Archival practice.
Visual storytelling.
They learn how artists transform identity, migration, nature, memory, heritage, the body, and social experience into contemporary visual expression.
They ultimately arrive at a larger truth:
THERE IS NO SINGLE WAY TO BE AN ARAB ARTIST.
An artist does not need to paint a dome.
A desert.
Arabic calligraphy.
A map.
Or a traditional symbol to prove identity.
An artist may speak about a grandmother.
A city.
A body.
A dream.
A tree.
A family photograph.
A room left behind.
A digital world that has never existed.
Or a color that has followed them since childhood.
THE CONCLUSION
The student returned to the studio.
The white canvas was still waiting.
The ten colors remained before him.
The teacher asked him again:
What is the color of the Arab world?
The student looked toward desert, sea, city, and village.
He saw the house that remained.
And the house existing only in memory.
He saw the body, migrant, family, dream, tree, and archive.
Then he said:
There is no single color.
No single image.
No single story.
No single memory.
He lifted his brush.
The canvas asked him:
Will you create something resembling their work?
He replied:
لا.
No.
I learned how each of them searched for a voice.
Now I must search for mine.
He did not ask:
How can I make my artwork look Arab?
He asked the more difficult question:
WHAT CAN NO ONE ELSE IN THE WORLD SEE EXACTLY THE WAY I SEE IT?
He placed the first color.
Then the second.
The canvas no longer asked him merely to fill it.
It asked him to reveal himself through it.
Ten artists.
Ten visions.
Ten different ways of encountering the world.
The journey did not end with the tenth artist.
It began when the student stood before an empty surface and no longer asked:
How can I create like them?
Instead, he asked:
HOW DO I SEE?
Only then did the eleventh color appear.
It did not belong to any of the ten artists.
It was his own.
