WORKSHOP 7 — MASTERING SKETCHUP: FROM IDEA TO 3D SPACE

A ten-session hands-on journey into architectural design and 3D modeling with SketchUp, where students progress from essential tools and accurate drawing to complete architectural models, materials, components, scenes, and presentation. By the end, an idea that once existed only on paper becomes a three-dimensional space that can be explored, refined, and communicated.

About this workshop

WHEN AN IDEA BECOMES SPACE

Every architectural project begins with something that cannot yet be entered.

A line.

A sketch.

A proportion.

A possibility.

An image in the designer's imagination waiting to become space.

This is where SketchUp becomes more than software.

It becomes a tool for thinking in three dimensions.

Through SketchUp, students learn to understand scale, proportion, mass, void, geometry, circulation, material, light, and the relationship between people and space while transforming two-dimensional ideas into three-dimensional environments.

The workshop begins with the fundamentals: understanding the interface, navigating through digital space, drawing accurately, working with dimensions and axes, and mastering essential modeling tools.

Students then progress from simple lines and surfaces to walls, floors, openings, stairs, roofs, furniture, architectural components, materials, and organized building models.

But mastering SketchUp does not mean memorizing where commands are located.

It means understanding which tool to use, when to use it, why to use it, and how to construct a model intelligently so that it remains organized, editable, accurate, and efficient.

Students also learn how to interpret two-dimensional architectural information and translate it into three-dimensional form, while using groups, components, tags, materials, and scenes to manage increasingly sophisticated projects.

Our purpose is not simply to teach software. It is to teach students how to think spatially—to move from drawing lines to constructing places, and from imagining architecture to giving that imagination digital form.

FROM LINE TO SPACE

The journey begins with a line on a screen. The line becomes a surface. The surface rises into a volume. The volume becomes architecture. And architecture becomes a space that can be entered, explored, changed, and experienced before it is ever built.

THE TEN SESSIONS

1. ENTERING THE THIRD DIMENSION — INTERFACE & NAVIGATION

Students are introduced to the SketchUp workspace, axes, menus, toolbars, views, and essential navigation tools including Orbit, Pan, and Zoom.

The first goal is simple but fundamental: to become comfortable moving, seeing, and thinking inside three-dimensional space.

2. THE LANGUAGE OF SKETCHUP — LINES, SURFACES & PRECISION

Students learn to create lines, rectangles, circles, arcs, polygons, and basic geometry while understanding inference, snapping, axes, dimensions, and precise numerical input.

A strong model does not begin with complexity. It begins with the right line in the right place.

3. FROM SURFACE TO VOLUME — BUILDING IN THREE DIMENSIONS

Students use Push/Pull, Move, Rotate, Scale, Offset, and related modeling techniques to transform two-dimensional geometry into walls, objects, masses, and three-dimensional forms.

4. ORDER WITHIN THE MODEL — GROUPS, COMPONENTS & TAGS

Students discover one of the foundations of professional SketchUp workflow: organization.

They learn to use groups, components, tags, repeated elements, hierarchy, and model structure so that increasingly complex projects remain clean, efficient, editable, and understandable.

5. FROM PLAN TO BUILDING — ARCHITECTURAL MODELING

Students learn how to interpret a two-dimensional architectural plan and transform it into a three-dimensional building.

Walls rise.

Openings appear.

Floors connect.

Doors, windows, stairs, roofs, and architectural elements begin to define real space.

6. THE DETAILS THAT CREATE PLACE — COMPONENTS, FURNITURE & HUMAN SCALE

Students add doors, windows, furniture, fixtures, architectural elements, and reusable components while learning how scale and proportion affect the way people experience a space.

The model begins to move beyond geometry and acquire function, character, and human presence.

7. WHEN SURFACES FIND THEIR IDENTITY — MATERIALS, COLORS & TEXTURES

Students learn to apply and edit materials, colors, and textures and understand their scale, orientation, repetition, and relationship to architectural surfaces.

Wood, stone, concrete, glass, metal, fabric, and color begin to give the digital model material identity.

8. SUN, SHADOW & THE ARCHITECTURAL VIEW — SCENES & PRESENTATION

Students explore sunlight, shadows, camera positions, perspective, field of view, and Scenes.

They learn how carefully selected viewpoints can explain architecture, reveal spatial relationships, and communicate the experience of moving through a project.

A model is not only something we build. It is an idea we must learn how to communicate.

9. THE INTELLIGENT MODEL — PROFESSIONAL WORKFLOW & EFFICIENCY

Students learn strategies for faster and cleaner modeling, model organization, file management, importing and exporting, troubleshooting, reducing unnecessary geometry, and preparing SketchUp models for more advanced visualization and rendering workflows.

The objective is not simply to work faster.

It is to work intelligently.

10. THE FINAL PROJECT — FROM IMAGINATION TO DIGITAL ARCHITECTURE

Students develop a small architectural project from initial drawings and plans into a complete three-dimensional model.

The final project brings together massing, spaces, openings, architectural elements, materials, furniture, organization, shadows, scenes, and presentation.

Students conclude by presenting their work, receiving constructive critique, refining the model, and preparing selected views for their developing portfolio.

WHAT STUDENTS TAKE WITH THEM

By the end of the workshop, students will have developed a strong practical foundation in SketchUp and three-dimensional architectural modeling.

They will be able to create accurate geometry, construct three-dimensional forms, translate plans into models, organize projects using groups, components, and tags, apply materials and textures, incorporate architectural elements, create scenes, explore shadows, and prepare a model for presentation and future visualization.

Students leave with a collection of exercises and models, together with an original three-dimensional architectural project suitable for further development and inclusion in their portfolio.

But the most important transformation happens in the way they begin to see.

A line is no longer merely a line.

It can become a wall.

A rectangle can become a room.

A plan can become a building.

And a building can become an experience of light, movement, proportion, material, and human space.

In SketchUp, architecture can begin with a single line. The line becomes a surface. The surface rises into a volume. The volume opens and space is born. And suddenly, something that existed only in the imagination becomes a place we can see, enter, explore, and understand—before a single stone is built.
