This text draws upon architect Filippo Brunelleschi’s experiments with linear perspective and his lost panel depicting the Florence Baptistery, viewed through a small opening and reflected in a mirror for comparison with reality.

The dialogue and scenes in the story are part of an imaginative literary interpretation exploring the relationship between the eye, the page, and space.

On an early fifteenth-century morning, Filippo Brunelleschi stood before the Florence Baptistery.

The building before him was real.

It had doors, walls, angles, and a mass occupying space within the city.

The page he carried possessed nothing.

No depth.

No distance.

No space a human being could enter.

The page said:

Do not ask me to carry a building.

I am a surface scarcely thicker than a shadow.

Brunelleschi replied:

I will give you a city.

The page laughed.

How will you place space inside something flat?

He answered:

I will search for the place where lines go when they move away from us.

He studied the edges of the building.

He found the vertical lines standing firm as though refusing to fall.

Yet the lines receding into distance moved closer together.

The farther they traveled, the narrower the distance between them became.

Until they seemed to disappear into a single point.

Brunelleschi placed the point upon the page.

It was so small that the city did not notice it.

By noon, the point had swallowed its first street.

Then it swallowed a row of windows.

Then a roof.

Then the distance between the building and the sky.

Brunelleschi said:

Return them.

The point replied:

I did not steal them.

I am the place where distances agree to disappear.

He drew the horizon line.

The horizon said:

I am the height of your eye.

If you rise, the world rises with you.

If you descend, buildings appear taller than you.

I do not exist only within the city.

I exist within the way you look at it.

Brunelleschi began drawing the Baptistery.

Every line receding toward the point made the building deeper.

Every diminishing window made the distance longer.

Every tile converging with the next drove the ground deeper into the page.

Days later, the drawing was complete.

But he did not trust his eyes.

The eye can see what it wishes to believe.

He pierced a small opening through the panel.

Then he stood at the place from which he had drawn the view.

He turned the panel toward the Baptistery.

From behind it, he looked through the opening.

He raised a mirror before the panel.

The painted image appeared in the mirror.

He lowered it.

The real building appeared.

He raised it again.

Image.

He lowered it.

Reality.

He repeated the movement until his eye no longer knew where Florence ended and the page began.

The mirror said:

You have proven that drawing can resemble reality.

Brunelleschi replied:

I have proven that reality itself reaches the eye as an image.

The point asked him:

Did you create space?

He answered:

لا.

No.

I taught the page how to persuade the eye that it exists.

The point said:

Then you have learned how to deceive people.

Brunelleschi answered:

Every tool can deceive when used without honesty.

Perspective does not falsify space.

It reveals the hidden order through which we perceive it.

Suddenly, every street in Florence began withdrawing toward the point.

The houses.

The towers.

The squares.

And the people who had never noticed themselves shrinking as they moved away.

Brunelleschi cried:

Stop.

The point said:

You wanted to know where space ends.

It ends here.

He asked:

What lies beyond you?

It answered:

Everything a single eye cannot see.

Then Brunelleschi understood that the vanishing point is not where lines die.

It is where the eye confesses its limits.

This is the power of perspective.

To transform a flat surface into a place possessing nearness, distance, height, and depth.

To make a wall recede.

A road continue.

And a window open onto a world that exists only within the drawing.

In this workshop, we will not merely learn how to draw converging lines.

We will learn how the eye perceives space.

We will understand the horizon line and vanishing points.

We will practice one-point, two-point, and three-point perspective.

We will draw rooms, streets, arches, stairways, and buildings.

We will learn how scale changes with distance.

And how light and shadow create a depth lines cannot produce alone.

But we will learn something deeper than technique.

Every perspective begins from the place where you stand.

When your position changes, the image changes.

No single person can see a building from every side at once.

Perspective does not tell us only about objects.

It tells us about ourselves.

About our position.

The limits of our vision.

And what disappears because we chose to look from only one direction.

Place a point upon the page.

Draw a line toward it.

Then another.

You will watch a wall take shape.

A ceiling rise.

A road stretch into the distance.

But before entering the space you have created, look behind you.

The page may have learned how to create a world.

And the vanishing point may already be drawing a road toward you.
