WORKSHOP TWELVE
SCULPTURE AND RELIEF IN ISLAMIC ART
WHEN BEAUTY EMERGES FROM THE SURFACE
THE WALL THAT REMEMBERED A NAMELESS HAND
A STORY INSPIRED BY THE FAÇADE OF QASR AL-MSHATTA
DISCLAIMER
This text draws upon the Umayyad façade of Qasr al-Mshatta, a masterpiece of carved stone in Islamic art, with its vegetal ornament, sculpted rosettes, and imagined creatures.
The names of the artists and artisans who carved the façade remain unknown, yet the traces of their tools endure upon the stone.
The dialogue and scenes in the story are part of an imaginative literary interpretation exploring their relationship with material, beauty, and time.
In the Jordanian desert, an unnamed sculptor stood before an unfinished wall.
History did not preserve his name.
No one recorded where he was born.
Nor who taught him to hear what lay concealed within stone.
All that remained of him was the strike of a chisel.
The sculptor arrived before sunrise.
He placed his hand upon the wall.
The stone was cold and silent.
He said:
I have come to release the beauty within you.
The stone replied:
There is nothing inside me.
I am a solid mass.
The sculptor answered:
Every surface says that before the first strike.
He raised his chisel.
And struck.
A small fragment flew from the stone.
The wall cried:
You have wounded me.
The sculptor replied:
I did not wound you.
I created your first shadow.
He struck a second time.
A line appeared.
He struck a third time.
The line curved.
From its curve emerged a vine leaf.
The leaf opened its stone veins.
From it extended a branch searching for a place it had not yet reached.
The wall said:
Why carve a plant upon stone that cannot grow?
The sculptor replied:
To make growth stronger than death.
He continued.
The strikes became rosettes.
The rosettes became gardens.
Among the branches appeared birds, animals, and creatures emerging from an ancient dream.
The stone said:
You fill me with what does not exist in the desert.
The sculptor replied:
That is why I carve it.
Art does not merely repeat what a place already possesses.
Sometimes it gives the place what it lacks.
At noon, an official arrived carrying a formal register.
He asked the sculptor:
What are you making?
He replied:
A garden that needs no water.
The official said:
The register requires the name of the work and the name of its maker.
The sculptor wrote the name of the palace.
Then he stopped before the space marked Artist.
He asked the stone:
What should I write here?
The wall answered:
Write your name.
The sculptor said:
If I write my name, they will know who made you.
But if I leave it empty, they may remember every hand that made me with you.
He left the space blank.
Years passed.
Empires changed.
The builders departed.
The palace remained unfinished, like a sentence whose writer stopped before the final word.
The sculptor disappeared.
The wall continued to carry the marks of his chisel.
One night, a carved rosette asked the wall:
Do you remember his face?
The wall replied:
لا.
No.
Do you remember his voice?
لا.
No.
Do you remember his name?
لا.
No.
The rosette asked:
Then what remains of him?
The wall answered:
I do.
I became his unreadable name, a name that can still be touched.
This is the power of sculpture.
It does not merely add an image to material.
It transforms its relationship with light.
When the chisel strikes the surface, depth is born.
When depth is born, shadow appears.
And when shadow moves, stone begins to breathe.
In relief carving, the form does not completely leave its surface.
It remains connected to it.
Half of it lives within the material.
The other half struggles to enter the world.
It is the art of the moment between concealment and revelation.
In this workshop, we will not merely learn how to shape a beautiful form.
We will learn how to see the form hidden within it.
We will explore sculpture in the round, incised carving, and low and high relief.
We will study mass, volume, proportion, and texture.
We will learn how light constructs form.
And how shadow gives relief its depth and power.
We will draw inspiration from the vegetal, geometric, and calligraphic forms of Islamic visual heritage.
Then reinterpret them through our own hands and contemporary language.
We will learn that addition requires imagination.
But removal requires courage.
A painter can cover a line.
For the sculptor, every removed fragment becomes a decision the stone cannot reverse.
Sculpture therefore does not begin in the hand.
It begins in the eye that can distinguish what must remain from what must leave.
Place your hand upon the surface.
Do not ask what you will place upon it.
Ask what is waiting to emerge from it.
Raise the tool.
Make the first strike.
The mark may appear small.
But it may be the first shadow in a garden that will live long after generations forget the name of its maker.
The artist may depart.
The palace may remain unfinished.
Yet a truthful hand can leave within stone a pulse that never ends.
