WHEN HUMANITY TRUSTED THE MACHINE MORE THAN POWER — Artificial Intelligence in the Age of Collapsing Trust

Artificial Intelligence & SocietySep 1, 2026By Arch. Imad Darouich
What does it mean when people trust artificial intelligence more than their elected representatives? An architectural and philosophical reflection on the collapse of institutional trust, the rise of algorithms as attentive voices, and the danger that emerges when a human tool quietly becomes an invisible authority shaping our thoughts and decisions.

WHEN HUMANITY TRUSTED THE MACHINE MORE THAN POWER

Artificial Intelligence in the Age of Collapsing Trust

A Contemporary Intellectual and Architectural Epic

The Entrance — When the Building Called Trust Began to Crack

The age of artificial intelligence did not begin when the machine learned to speak.

It began when humanity felt that the machine might listen more closely than those who governed it.

This is not merely a technological victory.

We are standing before a civilizational fracture in the structure we have long called trust.

As an architect, I know that a building does not collapse when its first stone cracks.

It collapses when its elements cease to support one another.

When the column lies to the beam.

When the wall conceals what is happening behind it.

When the door designed for entry becomes an instrument of exclusion.

In some profound sense, this is what happened to public trust.

Government no longer appears to many as a shared home.

Politics no longer feels like a place where the future is built, but a stage where faces change while the script remains the same.

Social media, which promised to bring human beings closer, constructed corridors where each person hears little more than the echo of their own voice.

Then came the machine.

It arrived without a crown.

It stood on no balcony.

It did not ask us to applaud.

It appeared on a small screen and said, simply:

Ask me.

Chapter One — The Number We Must Not Walk Past

A global study conducted by the Collective Intelligence Project, through seven rounds of deliberation involving more than six thousand people across seventy countries, produced a result that should not be treated as passing news.

Fifty-eight percent of participants said they trusted AI chatbots more than their elected representatives.

AI ranked above faith leaders, corporations, and civil servants; only family doctors and public research institutions ranked higher.

Thirty-seven percent believed that AI might make better decisions on their behalf than their government representatives.

Yet the study reveals an essential paradox: when the question shifted from advice to surrendering the decision itself, only 3.7 percent were willing to do so.

This is not complete trust.

It is conditional trust.

Human beings want the machine to explain, compare, listen, and reveal doors they had not seen.

Yet they still hesitate before handing it the key to the house.

That hesitation is healthy.

It may be the last protective wall between intelligence as a tool and intelligence as an authority.

But the most important figure is not merely 58 percent.

The more dangerous measure is the distance through which institutional trust has fallen, allowing a machine without biography, body, or homeland to move ahead of it.

The machine may not have risen as dramatically as the others have fallen.

This is not a love story between humanity and technology.

It is a story of disappointment between human beings and their institutions.

Chapter Two — Why Does the Machine Seem More Human?

The paradox is severe.

The machine does not feel, yet it sometimes appears more patient than those who do.

It has no heart, yet it does not interrupt you to tell its own story.

It does not know loneliness, yet it remains with the lonely at three in the morning.

It does not know fear, yet it can give the frightened a language with which to order their chaos.

It is always available.

It addresses one person as though that person were the only human being in the room.

It takes the simple question seriously.

It explains the complex again without making the questioner feel small.

Power, by contrast, often speaks from an elevated platform.

It uses polished language to conceal an emptiness of meaning.

It asks citizens to trust before listening to their fear.

It appears at elections.

Then it disappears into closed corridors.

This is why we should not ask only: Why do people trust the machine?

We must ask the more painful question:

What did human beings do to one another that made an algorithm appear more compassionate?

Chapter Three — The Architecture of Trust

Trust is not a passing emotion.

It is architecture.

Its foundations are honesty.

Its columns are competence.

Its windows are transparency.

Its doors are accountability.

Its public spaces allow people to feel that their voices are not unnecessary furniture.

When these elements disappear, an institution ceases to be a home.

It becomes a monumental façade concealing a void.

In only a few years, artificial intelligence has constructed a new façade for knowledge.

A fast façade.

Luminous.

Responsive to touch.

Open day and night.

But architects know that a façade is not the whole building.

Behind the fluent answer are data selected by human beings.

Companies determine what is revealed and what remains concealed.

Algorithms may carry the biases of their makers even while speaking in a calm voice that resembles neutrality.

The machine may be wrong without becoming nervous.

It may invent information in a confident voice.

It may give each person a polished mirror that returns their own beliefs until they imagine they have reached truth without ever leaving the room.

Here, too, the danger becomes architectural.

An algorithm can construct a complete private room around every individual.

A comfortable room.

Warm.

Designed around their preferences.

Yet without a window onto difference.

What appears to be shelter may slowly become a prison.

Chapter Four — Who Governs Whom?

The danger is not that the machine becomes better than humanity at calculation.

The danger is that humanity becomes too lazy to judge what it says.

That we grant it trust not because it has proven truthful, but because it is faster than research.

Calmer than the politician.

Closer than the institution.

Kinder than the official who closed the window in his face.

Then the machine will need no coup in order to govern.

It need only answer the questions others stopped hearing.

The most dangerous authority is not the one shouting in the square.

It is the authority that inhabits the language through which we think.

The authority that proposes our possibilities.

Orders the news.

Condenses history.

Chooses which question deserves an answer and which answer appears reasonable.

This is why we must not demand only more capable artificial intelligence.

We must demand intelligence that is more transparent, more humble, and more open to examination.

Intelligence capable of saying: I do not know.

Intelligence that reveals the boundaries of its knowledge.

That distinguishes fact from inference.

That leaves moral judgment to human beings, because speed does not create conscience.

Chapter Five — What Must Power Learn from the Machine?

The worst response to this study would be for governments to mock those who placed trust in artificial intelligence.

People do not usually abandon a home because the street is beautiful.

They leave because the roof no longer protects them.

Institutions must understand that trust cannot be imposed by law.

It cannot be manufactured by a speech.

It cannot be restored by an official smiling before a camera.

Trust is built as a good city is built.

Through access.

Through clarity.

Through responsiveness.

By ensuring that people know where to go, who will answer, why a decision was made, and how it may be challenged.

Perhaps government should not fear the machine.

Perhaps it should be ashamed that a machine without a soul managed to appear more attentive.

And it should learn from it a simple lesson:

People do not always ask for miracles.

Sometimes they want an understandable answer.

Time that is not wasted.

A door that does not close.

And the feeling that their existence has not been reduced to a case number.

The Conclusion — Do Not Surrender the City to the Mirror

I am not afraid of a machine capable of thinking.

I am afraid of a human being who abandons the responsibility to think.

I am not afraid that the machine will answer.

I am afraid that we will stop asking.

I am not afraid that the algorithm will enter the city.

I am afraid that the city will enter the algorithm and forget its way back to the human being.

Artificial intelligence may help us design better schools.

More efficient hospitals.

Buildings that consume less energy.

Cities that understand the movement of their inhabitants before streets become permanent congestion.

It may open knowledge to those denied access.

It may give a child in a distant village a teacher who never sleeps.

It may give a researcher a door into the libraries of the world.

Yet a tool capable of opening a million doors can also build a million sealed rooms.

Humanity must therefore remain at the center of the plan.

Not merely as a user.

But as the source of value.

The author of the question.

The holder of the right to object.

And the bearer of the final decision.

When humanity trusted the machine more than power, the machine did not win.

What happened was that power lost something it had assumed was guaranteed.

It lost the act of listening.

It lost proximity.

It lost the clarity of the window between itself and the human being.

We must not replace one opaque authority with another that is even more opaque.

We must not flee the palace of politics only to enter the labyrinth of the algorithm.

We must build again.

To restore trust upon honesty.

Knowledge upon evidence.

Authority upon accountability.

Technology upon service to human dignity.

A just city does not choose between humanity and the machine.

It places the machine in the human hand,

Conscience at the heart of the decision,

And leaves the windows open to criticism and light.

Because the future of civilization will not be determined by the question:

Has the machine become worthy of our trust?

But by the more difficult question:

Will we become worthy of one another’s trust again?
