This text draws upon the life of Shah Quli, one of the leading artists of the sixteenth-century Ottoman court, and his work in the saz style, where leaves, branches, and creatures intertwine in powerful, dynamic compositions.

The dialogue and scenes in the story are part of an imaginative literary interpretation created to explore the artist’s world, ideas, and legacy.

On a cloudy sixteenth-century morning, Shah Quli was summoned to the palace garden.

No one told him why he had been summoned.

An official waited for him, carrying a long register and a pair of silver scissors.

The official said:

A leaf has departed from the established order.

Shah Quli asked:

What has it done?

The official replied:

It refused to fall.

They led him to a solitary tree at the center of the garden.

Its branches were bare.

Only one long, serrated leaf remained, suspended in the air without a branch to hold it.

Shah Quli approached it.

The leaf said:

They ordered me to die because the season had ended.

But I have not yet completed my curve.

The official raised his scissors.

He said:

Everything that crosses its boundaries must be cut.

Shah Quli took out his pen.

He said:

Then I will draw for it boundaries that never end.

He placed the leaf upon a white page.

He drew its first vein.

The vein opened a door into another vein.

From the second vein, a branch emerged.

The branch curled around itself, then divided into two leaves, each moving toward a different time.

Shah Quli tried to stop them at the edge of the page.

But the edge withdrew.

The page expanded.

It became a room.

Then it became a wall.

Then it became an entire palace through whose corridors patterns walked instead of people.

Leaves climbed the columns.

Branches crossed the arches.

Flowers opened windows within the walls.

Whenever one pattern was completed, it gave birth to another.

Whenever the artist believed he had reached the end, he found the beginning waiting there.

The official said:

This violates the order.

Shah Quli replied:

This is the order you cannot see.

He pointed toward the branch.

He said:

See how it bends without breaking.

How it repeats without becoming a lifeless copy.

And how it fills empty space without suffocating it.

A dragon appeared among the leaves.

The official recoiled in fear.

Shah Quli did not move.

The dragon asked:

Who gave you permission to draw life inside ornament?

The artist answered:

You did not come from outside it.

You were concealed within the curve of the leaf.

The dragon said:

Did you know I was there?

Shah Quli replied:

لا.

No.

But the artist does not always draw what he knows.

Sometimes he draws to discover what had been waiting inside the line.

The dragon continued moving among the branches.

It did not destroy them.

The leaves became its bones.

The flowers became its breath.

The beast became part of the balance of beauty.

Then the official understood that ornament was not the quiet world he had imagined.

Within every leaf lives a struggle between growth and disappearance.

Within every curve, one force seeks escape while another returns it to balance.

The official asked:

What do you call this?

Shah Quli replied:

An ornament that remembers it was once alive.

This is the spirit of arabesque.

It is not a collection of leaves repeated to fill an empty wall.

It is a visual order that allows growth to continue after nature has stopped.

It is a branch that does not search for its ending.

Because every ending within it becomes the beginning of another form.

It is unity that does not erase difference.

Repetition that does not destroy freedom.

And fullness that respects emptiness.

In this workshop, we will not merely learn how to copy patterns.

We will learn how a pattern is born.

How a line becomes a stem.

The stem into a branch.

And the branch into movement crossing page, wall, and architecture.

We will study rhythm, repetition, symmetry, and balance.

We will learn how forms connect without surrendering their individual identities.

How to draw the leaf, flower, and tendril.

And how to transform visible nature into a geometric order that carries its essence without merely imitating it.

Begin with a single line.

Let it curve.

Then ask what it seeks.

It may become a branch.

It may open into a flower.

It may carry an entire wall toward a garden not yet planted.

But do not try to reach its end.

True arabesque does not end at the edge of the page.

It pauses only for a moment.

Then continues growing within the eye of the beholder.
