THE INTRODUCTION

The student found a miniature city upon the studio table.

Towers rose above it.

Streets divided its neighborhoods.

Glass shimmered across its façades.

Yet something was missing.

The city had no shadows.

No trees.

No squares where people could gather.

No memory explaining why anything had been built.

At the center of the model, he found an empty site.

Beside it was a question:

What makes an architect influential?

The number of buildings they design?

Their height?

Their fame?

Or the technology used within them?

The student raised his pencil to begin.

The empty site said:

Do not draw upon me before you understand me.

Know my sun.

My wind.

My history.

The material that came from my earth.

And the human being who will live within me.

Then ask yourself:

Why did you make this decision?

The student put down his pencil.

He understood that the journey does not begin by drawing a building.

It begins by learning how an architect thinks.

SESSION ONE

ZAHA HADID

WHEN ARCHITECTURE ESCAPED GRAVITY

The student entered a drawing that resembled the explosion of a city not yet built.

Lines moved in every direction.

Planes slid across one another.

Space refused to remain still.

The student asked Zaha Hadid:

Where is the building?

She replied:

Before a building becomes concrete and steel, it must first be liberated within the imagination.

Students follow her journey from radical drawings and experimental compositions to built works shaped by movement, continuity, complex geometry, and digital design.

The lesson was not to imitate her curves.

It was to possess her courage to ask:

Why must a building look the way we have always expected a building to look?

The student wrote:

New architecture begins when imagination stops asking permission from old forms.

SESSION TWO

RASEM BADRAN

WHEN THE MODERN CITY SPEAKS WITH ITS MEMORY

The student found a courtyard surrounded by passages, thresholds, and shadows.

Children crossed the square.

People met near the entrances.

The building was not an object isolated from the city.

It was part of its social fabric.

Students examine courtyards, passages, squares, massing, human scale, and relationships between buildings and their urban surroundings in Rasem Badran’s work.

The student asked:

Should I use a historical form so that the building belongs to its place?

The courtyard replied:

Do not copy my face.

Understand why I gathered people, created shade, and organized the transition between public and private life.

The student wrote:

Architecture can belong to its time without becoming disconnected from its memory.

SESSION THREE

ABDEL-WAHED EL-WAKIL

WHEN CRAFTSMANSHIP BECOMES ARCHITECTURAL KNOWLEDGE

The student entered a workshop where a builder worked with his hands.

Stone and brick were placed one upon another.

The arch rose.

Then the dome emerged from a balance of gravity, material, and experience.

Ornament was not a skin attached to the building.

Detail was part of the way it was constructed.

Students investigate traditional construction, natural materials, craftsmanship, arches, domes, load-bearing masonry, proportion, and shade through the work of Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil.

The student asked the craftsperson:

Does craftsmanship represent the past while the machine represents the future?

The craftsperson replied:

Craft is not the opposite of technology.

It is technology accumulated within human hands across generations.

The student wrote:

When craft disappears, we do not merely lose a method of decoration.

We lose an entire library once preserved within the hand.

SESSION FOUR

HASSAN FATHY

WHEN ARCHITECTURE RETURNED TO THE EARTH

The road led the student to a village made of earth.

The materials had not arrived from distant factories.

The earth itself had risen to become wall, vault, and dome.

Students study New Gourna and Hassan Fathy’s engagement with mud brick, traditional construction, climate response, affordability, and community.

The student saw openings receiving the wind and thick walls protecting interiors from heat.

He also encountered a question more difficult than every technical detail:

For whom do we build?

The village said:

If a building appears beautiful in a photograph but fails the people it was intended to serve, has the architecture succeeded?

The student wrote:

The value of architecture is not measured only by what the architect sees from outside.

It is measured by what human beings experience within it.

SESSION FIVE

MOHAMED MAKIYA

BAGHDAD BETWEEN MODERNITY AND IDENTITY

The student found Baghdad standing before two mirrors.

In the first, it saw its history, craftsmanship, brick, and shadows.

In the second, it saw modernity, transformation, and ambition for the future.

The city said:

I do not want to live imprisoned within my former image.

Yet I do not want to become a copy of another city.

Through Mohamed Makiya’s work, students investigate relationships among modernity, heritage, material, craft, ornament, shadow, and urban space.

The student placed a historical arch upon a modern façade.

Baghdad replied:

Identity is not an object you attach to my face.

It is the way you understand my place, climate, people, and memory.

The student wrote:

Architectural identity is deeper than appearance.

It is a way of reading place.

SESSION SIX

JA’AFAR TOUKAN

CIVIC ARCHITECTURE AND ARAB MODERNITY

The student stood before a public building.

It was not a home belonging to one family.

It was a place the community would enter through its many faces.

Students examine mass, material, proportion, public space, and civic and cultural architecture through the work of Ja’afar Toukan.

The building asked the student:

How will I receive people?

Will you make me tower arrogantly above them?

Or will you give me dignity without taking away their human scale?

The student understood that a public building does not represent the architect alone.

It enters the city’s memory and participates in shaping its relationship with institutions and culture.

He wrote:

A building can be unmistakably contemporary while remaining rooted in its city.

SESSION SEVEN

SAMI ANGAWI

SACRED ARCHITECTURE AND THE MEMORY OF PLACE

The student arrived in a city carrying layers of memory.

The streets remembered the footsteps of earlier generations.

Craft lived within timber, stone, screens, and details.

Students explore sacred architecture, heritage, traditional urban fabric, craftsmanship, and the architectural memory of the Hijaz.

Two machines appeared before the city.

The first demanded that everything be frozen exactly as it had been.

The second demanded that the entire past be demolished in the name of development.

The city rejected both choices.

And said:

Preservation does not mean stopping time.

Development does not mean evicting memory.

The student wrote:

The challenge is to allow the future to arrive without forcing memory to leave.

SESSION EIGHT

AMMAR KHAMMASH

WHEN ARCHITECTURE LISTENS TO THE LAND

The student arrived at the site carrying a predetermined form.

He attempted to place it upon the land.

In his imagination, the rock formation shifted and rejected it.

The land said:

You asked me nothing.

You did not read my slope.

Nor the movement of the sun across me.

Nor the vegetation living here.

Nor the archaeology that preceded your arrival.

Students investigate geology, landscape, climate, material, ecology, and archaeological history through Ammar Khammash’s work.

The student set aside his predetermined form.

He sat upon a rock.

And began to observe.

He wrote:

A good architect does not arrive at the site merely to announce what they wish to say.

The architect first arrives to hear what the place is saying.

SESSION NINE

RIFAT CHADIRJI

CAN MODERNISM SPEAK WITH A LOCAL ACCENT?

The student encountered a modern building of concrete and brick.

It was ordered and abstract.

Yet it was not placeless.

Shadow moved across its façade.

Openings, rhythms, and screens repeated in ways that allowed climate and memory to enter a modern language.

Students examine brick, façades, shadow, rhythm, proportion, abstraction, and the reinterpretation of regional elements through Rifat Chadirji’s work.

Modernism told the student:

Do not make me a single language exported unchanged from one city to every other city.

Allow place to transform me.

Allow climate to reshape my face.

Allow local material to give me another accent.

The student wrote:

Modernism may be global in its questions and local in its answers.

SESSION TEN

HISHAM MUNIR

MODERN ARCHITECTURE AND THE MAKING OF THE IRAQI CITY

At the final destination, the student did not find a single building waiting.

He found a city growing.

Schools, institutions, streets, neighborhoods, professional practice, and architectural education surrounded him.

Students examine Hisham Munir within the development of modern architecture, professional practice, institutions, and urban growth in Iraq.

The city asked the student:

Is the architect’s responsibility merely to design a beautiful building?

Or must the architect think about the city in which generations not yet born will live?

The student understood that every building adds something to the street.

Every street transforms the neighborhood.

Every architectural decision, however isolated it may appear, participates in making the city.

He wrote:

An architect does not merely place a building inside a city.

The architect participates in determining the kind of life possible within it.

During every session, students select a project and analyze it through a consistent architectural method.

Why is the building here?

CLIMATE

How does it respond to sun, heat, wind, and water?

How do people move through it?

What did technology make possible?

Then comes the final question:

IF ONE OF THESE DECISIONS CHANGED, WOULD IT STILL BE THE SAME BUILDING?

Students learn that architecture is not an isolated form.

It is a system of interconnected decisions.

THE FINAL PROJECT

THE ELEVENTH ARCHITECT

After studying ten architects, the student returned to the miniature city he had found at the beginning of the journey.

The empty site was still waiting.

But the question had changed.

It was no longer:

Which building do I like?

It became:

What does this place need?

The student selected a site.

Read its climate.

Understood its users.

Researched its history.

Studied its materials.

And identified a problem requiring an architectural response.

The project may become a cultural center.

A pavilion.

A mosque or contemplative space.

A library.

A community center.

An educational space.

A house.

Or a small environmental intervention.

Students develop the concept through site analysis, sketches, plan, section, materials, light, a 3D model, and final presentation.

One fundamental rule remains:

Do not design like Zaha Hadid.

Do not design like Hassan Fathy, Rasem Badran, Rifat Chadirji, Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, or Ammar Khammash.

Learn how they thought.

Then discover how you think.

FROM RECEIVER TO CREATOR

In the first session, the student looked at a building designed by someone else.

Then the student began to question.

To draw.

To compare.

To analyze.

To choose.

Until the student reached the blank page.

There was no longer a famous building to analyze.

No completed project to explain.

There was a site.

A human need.

A problem.

An imagination.

And here, the transformation occurred.

The student was no longer merely a receiver of knowledge.

The student became a maker.

A maker of ideas.

A maker of places.

A maker of possibilities that did not exist before the first line was drawn.

WHAT STUDENTS TAKE WITH THEM

Students encounter the ideas and contributions of ten influential Arab architects and multiple approaches to modern and contemporary architecture.

They understand relationships between heritage and modernity.

Climate and form.

Material and craft.

Architecture and identity.

Nature and technology.

Building and city.

Memory and future.

They gradually stop asking only:

Is this building beautiful?

And begin to ask:

Why was it designed this way?

For whom?

With what materials?

Within what climate?

What does it preserve?

What does it transform?

What does it contribute to its place?

And what happens to the human being within it?

THE CONCLUSION

The student returned to the city that had no shadows.

He placed his project upon the empty site.

It was not the tallest building.

Nor was it the most glittering.

But it created a square for people.

It preserved a tree that had existed before his arrival.

It opened its façade to the wind.

It used a material belonging to the site.

It brought light where people needed it.

It carried a trace of memory without disguising itself in the clothing of the past.

It carried an idea of the future without treating the site as a page without history.

Suddenly, shadows appeared within the city.

Trees began to grow.

The square filled with people.

The teacher asked him:

Which of the ten architects did you design like?

The student replied:

I did not design like any of them.

I learned from Zaha Hadid to liberate the question.

From Rasem Badran, to listen to the city’s memory.

From Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, to respect the knowledge of craft.

From Hassan Fathy, to ask for whom I build.

From Mohamed Makiya, that identity is deeper than a façade.

From Ja’afar Toukan, that a public building carries civic responsibility.

From Sami Angawi, that the future does not require the eviction of memory.

From Ammar Khammash, to listen to the land before speaking.

From Rifat Chadirji, that modernism can speak with a local accent.

From Hisham Munir, that every building participates in making the city.

Then I looked at the site, climate, people, and history.

And I made my decision.

Ten architects.

Ten visions.

Ten journeys from earth to algorithms.

From craftsmanship to digital design.

From village to metropolis.

From memory to future.

Yet the greatest lesson was not:

Design like me.

It was a question the ten architects placed before the student:

WHAT ARCHITECTURE CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT DOES NOT YET EXIST?

The student looked at the page.

Then he drew the first line.

At that moment, the eleventh architect was born.
