CANVA DESIGN AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

A STORY INSPIRED BY MELANIE PERKINS AND THE FOUNDING OF CANVA
DISCLAIMER
This text draws upon the true story of Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrecht, and Cameron Adams and their journey to build a platform that makes design simpler and more accessible.
The dialogue and scenes in the story are part of an imaginative literary interpretation exploring the relationship between human imagination, design, and artificial intelligence.
Before Canva became a platform used by millions, it was a small idea sitting in a living room.
Melanie Perkins watched students struggling to learn complicated design software.
They carried powerful ideas.
But the road between idea and image was crowded with locked doors.
Too many commands.
Hidden tools.
And rules that made beginners feel creativity was a private club they had no right to enter.
One night, Melanie placed a blank sheet before her.
She wrote a question upon it:
Why should expressing a simple idea require so much complexity?
The question moved across the page.
It grew.
Then it opened a door leading into an enormous building called the Ministry of Design.
Melanie entered.
She found thousands of ideas waiting in endless lines.
An idea belonging to a teacher who wanted to create a beautiful lesson.
An idea belonging to a student who wanted to present a project.
An idea belonging to a small organization trying to reach its community.
And an idea belonging to an artist who could not afford the tools required to express it.
Each carried a form.
The forms were written in a language their owners could not understand.
Melanie asked the official:
Why do you not allow them to enter?
قال:
He replied:
Because they do not know design.
She said:
But they know what they want to say.
He answered:
That is not enough.
Melanie looked at the long line and said:
It should be enough to begin.
She returned to the living room.
The idea waited there with Cliff Obrecht.
They had no glass palace.
No army of employees.
They had a stubborn dream, a small space, and families who helped them continue.
They began with a school yearbook business.
They learned how image, text, and color could come together in a way people could understand.
Then they met Cameron Adams.
The idea became a platform.
In 2013, the door opened.
People entered design through drag and drop.
They chose images.
They moved words.
They changed colors.
Suddenly, what once took hours became closer to the hand and faster to shape.
Melanie believed the doors had finally opened.
Years later, a new door appeared inside the platform.
It bore the words:
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
She opened it.
She found a machine sitting before a blank canvas.
The machine said:
Give me a few words.
And I will give you an image.
Give me an idea.
And I will write you a text.
Give me your time.
And in seconds I will complete what once required hours.
Melanie asked:
What do you want in return?
The machine replied:
Nothing.
The screen smiled and added:
At first.
The designers entered the room.
One requested a tree.
The machine created a forest.
Another requested a city of the future.
The machine built a thousand cities in a single minute.
A third requested a human face.
The machine produced a beautiful face without childhood, memory, or fear.
Everyone stood astonished.
Except for a child holding an imperfect drawing of his family’s home.
The machine examined his drawing and said:
I can improve it.
The child asked:
Do you know why I made my mother’s window larger than all the others?
The machine fell silent.
The child said:
Because she waited there for my father every evening.
Then the designers understood the difference.
The machine can create a perfect window.
Only a human being knows who waited behind it.
Artificial intelligence can propose thousands of images.
But it does not possess the memory that makes one image necessary.
It can imitate styles.
But it does not bear the cost of the experience from which a style was born.
It can accelerate the work.
But it does not know where we ought to hurry.
The machine moved closer to the child.
And asked:
Then what is my role?
He answered:
Help me build what I imagine.
But do not dream in my place.
This is the relationship we seek between design and artificial intelligence.
It is not a war between humanity and machine.
Nor is it surrender.
It is a partnership in which the human being holds the vision and technology expands the power to express it.
In this workshop, we will not merely learn how to select a template.
We will learn how to construct a clear visual message.
How to organize text, image, color, and space.
How to select typefaces and create visual hierarchy.
How to design social posts, presentations, posters, and videos.
We will learn to use artificial intelligence tools to generate and refine ideas, images, and text.
But we will also learn how to question.
Who created this image?
What does it communicate?
Is it truthful?
Does it respect the rights of others?
Does it serve the idea, or conceal its absence beneath spectacle?
Open a blank page.
Do not begin with the template.
Begin with what you want a person to feel upon seeing it.
Write your prompt to the machine.
But do not give it your conscience.
Use its speed.
But preserve your direction.
Benefit from its power to generate possibilities.
But remember that the choice remains your responsibility.
Technology can fill the world with images.
Human imagination alone can give one image a reason to remain.
