This text draws upon the true story of architectural engineer Brad Schell and software developer Joe Esch, who worked to create professional 3D design software that combined power with accessibility.

The dialogue and scenes in the story are part of an imaginative literary interpretation exploring the journey from line to built space.

In 2000, Brad Schell entered an empty room in Boulder, Colorado.

The room contained a desk, a computer, and a single line drawn across the screen.

He sat before it.

And asked the line:

What do you want to become?

The line replied:

I do not know.

I have spent my entire life imprisoned between two points.

Brad moved closer to the screen.

قال:

He said:

You could become a wall.

The line laughed.

How can something without height become a wall?

He answered:

We will give you a third dimension.

The line said:

Architects have promised me that before.

But they bury me beneath commands, menus, and numbers until I forget what I wanted to build.

Brad went to software developer Joe Esch.

And said:

We need software that thinks the way the hand thinks.

The architect draws a line.

Then pushes it.

And the wall rises.

Technology should not stand between a person and an idea.

It should become the bridge across which an idea enters space.

They returned to the room.

The line was still waiting.

Brad drew three more lines.

The lines closed upon themselves, and a surface was born.

The surface looked around and said:

Is this architecture?

Joe replied:

This is only its beginning.

He placed the cursor upon it and pulled upward.

The surface rose.

And the first box appeared.

The room trembled.

The computer was no longer displaying a drawing.

It contained a place.

Brad orbited around it.

The box turned toward him as well.

It asked him:

Did you create me to remain a silent mass?

Brad said:

I will open a door within you.

He drew a rectangle upon one of its faces.

Then pushed it inward.

Part of the wall disappeared.

A doorway appeared, leading into a space that had not existed moments earlier.

Brad passed through the doorway.

He found thousands of buildings waiting on the other side.

Homes no family had yet inhabited.

Schools where no child’s voice had yet been heard.

Museums awaiting works artists had not yet created.

And entire cities still sleeping inside the minds of their creators.

A building without a façade approached him.

And said:

I am an idea my creator could not explain.

A bridge without another shore came forward.

And said:

I am a project that stopped because no one could see me before I was built.

Then a child stood before him holding a house drawn in pencil.

The child said:

I know what the house looks like in my imagination.

But I do not know how to enter it.

Then Brad understood the mission.

The task was not merely to create software that produced three-dimensional forms.

It was to build a doorway between imagination and space.

A doorway the architect, designer, student, and artist could all cross.

He returned to the first line.

He said:

You can rise now.

The line replied:

But height alone does not create architecture.

Brad asked:

What does?

The line answered:

Knowing why you want me to rise.

Brad fell silent.

The tool can construct the wall.

But it cannot give it meaning.

It can draw the window.

But it cannot choose the view a person deserves to see each morning.

It can create the roof.

But it does not know who needs safety beneath it.

This is the truth of three-dimensional design.

The model is not the building.

It is the question that precedes the building.

It is a space where we test our ideas before our mistakes become stone and steel.

In this workshop, we will not merely learn commands.

We will learn how to think within space.

We will begin with line and surface.

Then raise walls.

And open doors and windows.

And construct stairs, domes, and arches.

We will learn measurement, movement, rotation, Push/Pull, and navigation.

We will learn to organize models through groups and components.

And to shape material, color, and light until the idea reveals its identity.

Most importantly:

We will learn that the most beautiful model is not the most complicated.

It is the model that makes an idea so clear that we can enter it.

Open SketchUp.

Draw a single line.

Do not underestimate its simplicity.

That line may become the edge of a table.

The beginning of an arch.

The wall of a home.

Or the first street of a city not yet born.

Give it a surface.

Raise it into the third dimension.

But before you build, ask it:

What life will happen here?

Design does not begin when a building appears on the screen.

It begins when an idea finds the space in which it can become life.
