THE INTRODUCTION

The student entered an old room.

It was filled with manuscripts, photographs, carpets, carved doors, and objects that had survived distant times.

The guardian told him:

This is the room of heritage.

Preserve everything exactly as it is.

Move nothing.

Question nothing.

Then he locked the door from outside.

The student remained alone among the beautiful objects.

He attempted to copy an ancient script.

He drew a geometric pattern.

He added a dome and a historical symbol to his canvas.

Yet the work remained silent.

The canvas asked him:

Do you believe calligraphy, a dome, and ornament are enough to carry the memory of a civilization?

The student replied:

Are these not our identity?

It answered:

Heritage is deeper than its appearance.

It may live within the artist’s language.

In a childhood memory.

In a changing city.

In a family story.

In a journey of migration.

In an inherited poem.

In a landscape that no longer appears as it once did.

In something lost.

Or in something carried across continents.

Ten doors appeared within the room.

The canvas said:

Behind every door is an artist who sees the relationship between memory and the present differently.

Do not search for a single definition of art from the Muslim world.

Search for diversity.

The student then carried the question of the journey:

HOW CAN AN ARTIST CARRY MEMORY FORWARD WITHOUT BECOMING TRAPPED INSIDE THE PAST?

SESSION ONE

SHIRIN NESHAT

IDENTITY, GENDER, AND EXILE

The student opened the first door.

He entered a world where photography, film, text, the body, gaze, and exile intersect.

The images were black and white.

The meanings were not.

Writing moved across body and image, creating layers of identity, memory, representation, and questioning.

The student asked:

How does a person see a culture while living far from it?

Does exile make memory clearer?

Or more complicated?

The image replied:

When you stand between inside and outside, you see what neither side can see alone.

The student wrote:

Identity is not always an answer.

It may be a question the artist continues asking throughout a lifetime.

SESSION TWO

AHMED MATER

TRANSFORMING CITIES AND SACRED LANDSCAPES

Behind the second door, the student found a city changing rapidly.

Buildings rose.

Machines moved.

Roads, projects, and infrastructure expanded.

Yet the shadows of earlier places remained beneath the new landscape.

Through photography, video, installation, and conceptual practice, students examine Ahmed Mater’s engagement with urban transformation, technology, society, architecture, and landscapes surrounding sacred places.

The city asked:

What happens to memory when a place changes faster than people can remember it?

What do we gain when we build?

And what may disappear beneath new construction?

The student wrote:

A city is not merely a collection of buildings.

It is a collection of times living one above another.

SESSION THREE

LALLA ESSAYDI

PHOTOGRAPHY, CALLIGRAPHY, AND REPRESENTING IDENTITY

The student entered a space that appeared historical.

Body, clothing, ornament, and architecture suggested a familiar image.

Yet calligraphy extended across body, wall, and textile.

The text was no longer present only to be read.

It became surface, rhythm, boundary, and architecture for meaning.

Students investigate how an apparently traditional setting can be reconstructed to raise contemporary questions about identity, body, representation, and gaze.

Calligraphy told the student:

When I enter an image, I do not remain merely a word.

I can transform your relationship with body, space, and what you believe you know.

The student wrote:

When language enters an image, it may become architecture for meaning.

SESSION FOUR

eL SEED

WHEN CALLIGRAPHY ENTERS THE CITY

The letter left the page.

It grew.

Crossed the wall.

And entered the street.

Within eL Seed’s work, Arabic calligraphic traditions meet contemporary visual language, street art, and monumental public projects.

Students examine scale, lettering, architecture, community, site, and public space.

The student asked the wall:

What happens if the viewer cannot read the words?

The letter replied:

The viewer may not know my linguistic meaning.

Yet they may still feel my movement, rhythm, and presence.

The student wrote:

An entire wall may become a message.

We may feel the rhythm of words before understanding them.

SESSION FIVE

MOUNIR FATMI

LANGUAGE, TECHNOLOGY, AND CULTURAL MEMORY

Behind the fifth door, the student found obsolete machines, wires, media, and archival images.

They had once been born as signs of the future.

Now they appeared like artifacts from an earlier digital civilization.

Students investigate relationships among language, machines, media, communication, archives, and cultural memory through Mounir Fatmi’s work.

The student asked the obsolete machine:

Where did your future go?

It replied:

I changed from a promise of tomorrow into an artifact of yesterday.

The student wrote:

Even technology eventually becomes archaeology.

Every modern machine carries, from its birth, the possibility of becoming memory.

SESSION SIX

KHALED JARRAR

BORDERS, THE BODY, AND PERFORMANCE

The student found a line upon a map.

It appeared thin and motionless.

When he attempted to cross it, the line became a wall, checkpoint, delay, and bodily experience.

Students examine how borders, movement, public space, the body, performance, film, and artistic intervention become components of contemporary practice.

The student asked:

When does a border cease to be a political line?

His tired body answered:

When it begins measuring my time, steps, fear, and ability to arrive.

Students learn to examine politically engaged art critically and distinguish the artist’s perspective from documented historical facts.

The student wrote:

A border may be drawn upon paper.

Human beings experience it through the body.

SESSION SEVEN

DIA AL-AZZAWI

WHEN LITERATURE AND HISTORY ENTER THE CANVAS

The student opened a book of poetry.

The words left the page and became color.

The story became composition.

An ancient symbol entered a contemporary canvas without losing its history or preventing the work from belonging to the present.

Students explore relationships among painting, color, poetry, literature, history, abstraction, and cultural memory through Dia al-Azzawi’s work.

The student asked the ancient symbol:

Should I restore you exactly as you were?

It replied:

Do not attempt to revive my former appearance.

Give me a new language through which I can speak to your time.

The student wrote:

The artist does not resurrect the past exactly as it was.

The artist gives it another voice.

SESSION EIGHT

LAILA SHAWA

POLITICS, POPULAR IMAGERY, AND VISUAL STORYTELLING

The student entered a space filled with intense color, repeated images, and symbols.

The artwork attracted him through beauty first.

It then confronted him with a subject he had not expected.

Students investigate Laila Shawa’s use of color, repetition, photographic imagery, printmaking, and references to contemporary visual culture.

The student asked the color:

Why do you appear beautiful while carrying a painful meaning?

It replied:

I attracted your eye so that you could not escape the question.

The student wrote:

An artwork may begin by seducing the eye.

It may then leave the mind facing a truth for which it was unprepared.

SESSION NINE

NJA MAHDAOUI

WHEN THE LETTER BECOMES RHYTHM

The student saw forms resembling letters.

He attempted to read them.

They refused to become a conventional sentence.

They moved across the surface like music.

Lines accelerated.

Others paused.

Empty spaces created silence between rhythms.

Students examine how Nja Mahdaoui transforms calligraphic forms into abstract and rhythmic compositions.

The letter said:

Do not ask me only to tell you what I mean.

Observe how I move.

How I create form, space, and rhythm.

The student wrote:

When the letter is released from the obligation to be read, it can begin to dance.

SESSION TEN

AYMAN BAALBAKI

MEMORY, CONFLICT, AND THE CONTEMPORARY CITY

Behind the final door, a wounded building stood within the canvas.

Its windows were empty.

Its façade carried the traces of a city marked by layers of history, displacement, destruction, and reconstruction.

Within Ayman Baalbaki’s work, architecture was no longer merely a background for events.

The building became a witness.

A trace.

A memory.

And a symbol of a city attempting to carry its history while continuing to live.

The student asked the building:

Do walls remember?

It replied:

Cities do not preserve memory only within archives.

Sometimes walls remember too.

The student wrote:

Architecture within a painting may be transformed from building into testimony.

THE CALLIGRAPHY, IMAGE, AND MEMORY LAB

During every session, students select one artwork and investigate it carefully.

What did I notice first?

What medium is being used?

How does color function?

Is writing present?

Must I understand it linguistically to experience the work?

What role does the body play?

What role is played by architecture, city, or landscape?

Is there a historical or cultural reference?

What has the artist drawn from heritage?

How has it been transformed?

What can I verify as fact?

What represents my personal interpretation?

Students then ask:

IF WE REMOVE THE MOST OBVIOUS CULTURAL SYMBOL, DOES THE ARTIST’S IDENTITY REMAIN?

Artistic identity does not live only within recognizable symbols.

It may live within an idea.

Memory.

Rhythm.

Material.

Experience.

Or in a distinctive way of seeing the world.

CHALLENGE ONE

THE VISUAL STUDY

Each student selects one of the ten artists.

The student does not copy an artwork.

Instead, the student identifies one artistic principle learned from that artist.

It may be calligraphy as visual form.

The relationship between body and space.

Transforming memory into image.

Using the city as subject.

Working with archives.

Monumental scale.

Abstraction.

Public intervention.

The student then creates an original visual study based upon that principle.

CHALLENGE TWO

TWO ARTISTS, TWO VISIONS

Students select two artists and prepare a short comparative study.

They do not ask:

Which artist is better?

بل:

Instead:

How does each approach memory?

How does each use material?

How does heritage appear?

What roles do place and identity play?

Where do their visions diverge even when they begin with similar questions?

Students learn comparison and analysis, not description alone.

THE FINAL PROJECT

FROM MEMORY TO FUTURE

The student returned to the room of heritage.

He selected something connected to memory, culture, city, family, language, or human experience.

A word.

A place.

A family photograph.

A story.

A building.

An object.

A journey.

A language.

Or a memory.

Then he asked:

How can I give something inherited, remembered, or experienced a new visual language?

The project may become a painting, photograph, digital artwork, installation, short video, calligraphic composition, or public-art proposal.

It may combine several media.

One principle guides the project:

DO NOT COPY HERITAGE.

ENTER INTO A CONVERSATION WITH IT.

Do not imitate the artist.

Understand the question the artist asked.

Then discover your own.

WHAT STUDENTS TAKE WITH THEM

Students encounter ten diverse artistic practices connected to the Muslim world and its wider cultural landscapes.

Photography.

Painting.

Contemporary calligraphy.

Abstraction.

Video.

Installation.

Performance.

Public art.

Conceptual practice.

They learn how individual and collective memory can become visual expression.

How a letter becomes form.

The body becomes a question.

The city becomes memory.

Heritage becomes the beginning of something new.

We do not want the student to leave saying:

I learned about ten artists.

We want the student to say:

I discovered ten different ways of seeing the relationship among art, humanity, culture, and memory.

THE CONCLUSION

The student stood again before the door of the heritage room.

The guardian was waiting.

He asked:

Did you preserve everything exactly as it was?

The student replied:

I preserved the knowledge within it.

But I did not imprison it within its former shape.

I took the question from the image.

From the letter, its rhythm.

From the city, its memory.

From the body, its experience.

From the archive, what survived.

From the void, what was lost.

Then I created a work belonging to my own time.

The guardian attempted to close the door.

The door disappeared.

The heritage room opened toward the city and the future.

The student said:

Heritage is not a room whose door we lock to protect what lies inside.

HERITAGE IS THE DOOR.

Every generation opens it from a different side.

Ten artists.

Ten visual languages.

Ten journeys between memory and the present.

Then an empty space was placed before the student.

There was no eleventh artist waiting behind another door.

His turn had arrived.

The canvas asked him:

Where is your memory?

What is your visual language?

What world did you come from?

AND WHAT WILL YOU CREATE FROM IT?

The student raised his hand.

And drew the first line that neither imitated the past nor denied it.

A line carrying memory.

And moving toward the future.
