DISCLAIMER

This text draws upon the life of the Abbasid calligrapher and vizier Ibn Muqla and his historic contribution to establishing a proportional geometric system for Arabic script.

Historical sources record that his right hand was severed during his imprisonment amid the political struggles of Baghdad.

The dialogue and scenes in the story are part of an imaginative literary interpretation created to explore his artistic and human world and legacy.

In tenth-century Baghdad, Ibn Muqla was summoned to appear before the Court of Letters.

He entered the chamber.

The judge was the letter Alif.

It stood upright at the center of the hall, bowing to no one.

The letter Ba sat to its right.

Its dot rested beneath it like a witness carrying a secret it could not reveal.

The letter Mim curved around a small emptiness as though guarding a heart that refused to be seen.

Alif asked:

By what right do you measure us?

Ibn Muqla answered:

To give every letter its rightful measure.

Alif said:

Can beauty be measured?

He replied:

Beauty that does not know its proportion may become chaos.

And proportion that does not know beauty may become a prison.

Ibn Muqla placed the reed pen upon the page.

He pressed its nib, and a slanted dot appeared.

The dot said:

I am smaller than you, yet you will measure everything through me.

He drew a second dot.

Then a third.

One above another.

From the dots, Alif rose like a column supporting the roof of language.

Then he drew a circle whose diameter equaled the height of Alif.

The letters entered the circle one after another.

Each letter received its height.

Every curve received its reach.

And every dot received a place from which no earthly power could move it without disturbing the balance.

Ibn Muqla looked at the page.

He did not see words.

He saw a city.

Alif was a minaret.

Lam was an arch rising before returning to earth.

Ba was a low dome sheltering a solitary dot.

Mim was an inner chamber whose door could be found only by those who had mastered silence.

The letters said:

You have given us order.

But can you protect order from power?

Ibn Muqla did not answer.

He knew that the palaces for which he wrote decrees could erase the writer with a single word.

Years passed.

The calligrapher became a vizier.

He entered the palaces of power more than once.

Each time, he wrote orders capable of changing the fate of men.

He did not notice that the ink was recording his fate as well.

When power turned against him, he was taken to prison.

There was no paper there.

No inkwell.

No pen.

Only the walls surrounded him like sealed pages.

Then his right hand was severed.

He looked at the place where his hand had been.

The letter did not scream.

Only the hand was gone.

That night, the Court of Letters returned.

Alif stood before him and asked:

Where is your calligraphy now?

Ibn Muqla replied:

It was never in my hand.

Alif asked:

Where, then, does it live?

He answered:

In the proportion through which you came to know yourselves.

In the dot that became a measure.

In the circle that gathered your differences without erasing your identities.

And in every hand after mine that will write a letter more beautiful than any I wrote.

The dot said:

Then they did not sever only your hand.

They separated the hand from its owner, but they could not separate the letter from time.

The letters moved closer to him.

For the first time, Alif bowed.

Ba became a boat.

Its dot became a lamp beneath the water.

Mim opened its hidden chamber.

Inside it, Ibn Muqla found thousands of calligraphers not yet born.

Each carried a pen.

And within every pen lived a fragment of his absent hand.

Then he understood that the body may lose a limb.

But an idea that discovers its true proportion cannot be amputated.

This is the power of Arabic calligraphy.

It is not the decoration of words.

It is the architecture of meaning.

Within it, the letter is not merely written.

It is constructed.

It has foundation, height, and balance.

It has a visible body.

And an inner space where the spirit can breathe.

In this workshop, we will not merely learn how to hold the pen.

We will learn how to cut it until its voice becomes clear.

How to form the dot.

How to measure Alif.

How to balance extension, curvature, and emptiness.

We will learn that the space between two letters is not wasted.

It is the silence that allows the word to be heard.

And that the beauty of a letter is not born from ornament alone.

It is born from patience, discipline, and repetition.

And from a hand learning humility before a measure more precise than itself.

Place the pen upon the page.

Begin with a dot.

It may appear too small to carry meaning.

Yet through it, the letter is measured.

From the letter, the word is built.

And through the word, the memory of an entire civilization may cross time.

The hand may come to an end.

The ink may dry.

The page may disappear.

But a letter built upon beauty and balance does not die.

It waits for a new hand.

And perhaps that hand will be yours.
