DISCLAIMER
This text draws upon the life of the real artist Edgar Degas and his profound relationship with pastel, while its dialogue and scenes form an imaginative literary interpretation of his artistic world.
On a gray Parisian winter evening, Edgar Degas awoke to discover that light had forgotten his address.
He opened the window.
The city was still there, but half of it had vanished.
Buildings had lost their edges.
Faces crossed the street without features.
The sky resembled a page someone had tried to erase, only to grow tired halfway through.
Degas went to the doctor.
The doctor examined his eyes for a long time, then handed him a sealed document.
It contained no prescription.
It was a summons to appear before the Court of Vanishing Things.
Degas entered a courtroom without windows.
Light occupied the judge’s chair.
The eye stood before it, accused of failure.
The judge asked him:
How will you continue to paint when you are beginning to lose your sight?
Degas answered:
I will paint what I remember.
The judge replied:
Memory is not precise.
Degas said:
That is why it may be more truthful.
He returned to his studio.
The oils waited in their heavy containers, but the pastels lay scattered across the table like dust fallen from a broken dream.
He picked up a blue stick.
It said to him:
You do not need to see me clearly.
You need only remember the sky.
He took the red.
It told him:
Do not search for me in objects.
Search for me in the trembling of the heart.
Then he reached for yellow.
Yellow said nothing.
It simply glowed between his fingers like the final lamp in a city whose windows had gone dark.
Degas began to draw a dancer.
He could not see her face completely.
So he drew her exhaustion.
He could not clearly see her feet.
So he drew the pain concealed inside her shoes.
He could not see the stage.
So he drew the instant when the body stands between falling and flight.
As his eyesight weakened, his colors grew bolder.
Details withdrew.
Yet truth moved closer.
Pastel no longer described the dancer.
It began revealing the human being imprisoned within her movement.
Color clung to his fingers, his clothes, and his face.
When he looked into the mirror, he did not see a painter.
He saw a man slowly becoming his final drawing.
His reflection asked:
Are you afraid of losing your sight?
Degas replied:
I fear looking all my life without ever seeing.
Then he understood that the eye alone does not create the artist.
There is another eye within memory.
An eye within the hand.
And an eye that awakens in the heart when the world can no longer explain itself.
This is pastel.
A color that does not hide behind oil or water.
Naked pigment touching paper directly.
Fragile as dust.
Powerful as a memory that refused to die.
In this workshop, we will not merely learn how to blend colors.
We will learn how to find light when it is no longer clear.
How to create depth from delicate layers.
How to transform a touch into movement.
Dust into a body.
And silence into a face almost ready to speak.
We will learn that drawing does not begin when the hand takes hold of color.
It begins when a human being sees what passes before others unseen.
Place the pastel upon the paper.
Do not ask what color it carries.
Ask what it has come to rescue from disappearance.
For you may not be standing before a white sheet.
You may be standing before the final window that memory can still open.
