THE MAGIC OF 3D ILLUSION DRAWING
WHEN THE PAGE DECEIVES THE EYE
THE DRAWING THAT REFUSED TO BE SEEN FROM THE FRONT
A STORY INSPIRED BY LEONARDO DA VINCI’S OPTICAL EXPERIMENTS
DISCLAIMER
This text draws upon two anamorphic drawings in Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Atlanticus: elongated images of an eye and a child’s head that recover their natural proportions only when viewed from an oblique angle.
The dialogue and scenes in the story are part of an imaginative literary interpretation exploring the relationship between the image, the eye, and the viewer’s position.
Late one night, Leonardo da Vinci drew an eye upon a long sheet of paper.
The eye appeared distorted.
Stretched far beyond its natural form.
It looked as though someone had pulled it from both sides until it lost its memory.
His assistant said:
You have made a mistake.
Leonardo replied:
Perhaps you are standing in the wrong place.
The assistant said:
I am standing directly in front of it.
Leonardo replied:
That is the problem.
At midnight, they heard a knock at the studio door.
A man in a black robe entered, carrying a glass scale.
قال:
He said:
I am the Inspector of Visual Truth.
I received a complaint from a drawn eye claiming that you have deformed it.
The inspector approached the page.
He viewed it from the front.
Then wrote in his register:
The eye is unfit for sight.
Leonardo objected.
He said:
The eye does not need correction.
The viewer is the one who needs to move.
The inspector laughed.
Truth does not change its form when we change our position.
Leonardo replied:
Perhaps the object does not change.
But what we are able to see of it always does.
He asked him to move toward the edge of the page.
The inspector lowered his head.
And closed one eye.
Then he looked along the surface from a sharp angle.
Suddenly, the distortion contracted.
The eye returned to its natural proportion.
The drawn eye opened its lid.
And looked at the inspector.
The man stepped back in alarm.
The eye stretched again and returned to a strange form.
He moved closer.
It became an eye again.
He stepped away.
It disappeared.
He approached once more.
It appeared clearer than his own real eye.
The inspector asked:
Where is the true image?
Leonardo replied:
It does not exist within the paper alone.
It is born at the moment when paper and eye meet from the correct position.
The inspector said:
Then you deceive people.
Leonardo replied:
I do not deceive the eye.
I reveal how easily it deceives itself.
Suddenly, the eye emerged from the page.
It was no longer a flat drawing.
It hovered in the air like a window observing the room.
It said to the inspector:
You believe you see me because light reaches you.
But your mind reconstructs what it receives.
It measures.
Compares.
Completes what is missing.
Then it presents its interpretation and asks you to call it reality.
Leonardo drew a square upon the page.
He extended its lines in unnatural ways.
He added a heavy shadow along one side.
From the front, the form appeared broken.
But when the inspector moved to the marked position on the floor, a complete cube rose from the page.
He walked around it.
The cube vanished.
He returned to the point.
The cube returned.
The inspector said:
This object exists from only one position.
Leonardo replied:
Are not many things in life the same?
We judge them from the front.
And they appear distorted.
We approach from another angle.
And they recover their meaning.
The inspector rejected this answer.
He opened his register to issue a violation.
But the words inside had stretched.
He could no longer read them.
Leonardo said:
Change your position.
The inspector moved.
The words straightened and read:
No vision is innocent of the position from which it looks.
The man closed the register.
And placed a seal upon the page.
The seal did not appear circular.
It appeared as a deep doorway descending into it.
The inspector looked at the doorway and asked:
Where does it lead?
The eye replied:
To the other side of your certainty.
This is the power of 3D illusion drawing.
To make a flat page appear to rise, descend, or open.
To transform a line into an edge.
A shape into a solid form.
And shadow into a distance separating the drawing from the page.
The illusion is not created by the drawing alone.
It is created by angle, light, shadow, and the position of the eye.
In this workshop, we will learn the principles of anamorphic perspective.
How to stretch forms so they appear correct from a chosen viewpoint.
How to use foreshortening, perspective, and overlap.
How to construct a convincing shadow.
And how to make an object appear to emerge from the page.
We will draw openings, stairways, floating forms, and impossible solids.
We will learn how to choose the camera angle that completes the illusion.
But we will also learn a deeper lesson.
Not every strange image is wrong.
And not everything that appears real exists.
Sometimes the problem is in the drawing.
Sometimes it lies in the position from which we insisted on looking.
Place the page before you.
Draw a form that appears impossible.
Stretch its lines.
Construct its shadow.
Then move.
The solid may disappear.
The surface may open.
And you may discover that the page did not deceive your eye.
It merely forced the eye to admit that it cannot see the whole truth from a single position.
