This text draws upon the life of the real artist M. C. Escher, his visits to the Alhambra, and his profound encounter with Islamic geometric patterns.

The dialogue and scenes in the story are part of an imaginative literary interpretation created to explore the artist’s world, ideas, and legacy.

In the autumn of 1922, a young Dutchman entered the Alhambra with a pencil in his pocket.

His name was Maurits Cornelis Escher.

He entered the palace as a visitor.

But he did not leave as he had entered.

That day, the walls were not waiting to be observed.

They were waiting to interrogate him.

Escher stopped before a geometric pattern covering an entire wall.

He found no beginning.

And he found no end.

Every form opened a door into another.

Every line returned by another path to the place where it had begun.

He took out his pencil.

Before it touched the paper, he heard the wall ask:

By what right do you copy what you do not understand?

Escher answered:

I do not wish to copy it.

I want to know how it lives.

The wall replied:

Then begin with a single line.

Escher drew the line.

But it did not stop where he intended it to stop.

It continued across the page.

It turned.

It divided.

Then it returned to stand behind the hand that had drawn it.

Escher tried to erase it.

But the eraser disappeared into the drawing.

He drew a door to give it an exit.

The door opened onto a staircase ascending downward.

He drew a window.

Through it, he saw the same room in which he stood.

He drew a bird.

The bird opened its wings, and the space between them became a fish.

He drew another fish.

The water surrounding it became sky.

Escher raised his head in alarm.

He said to the wall:

I have lost control of the drawing.

The wall answered:

You have only begun to learn how to see.

At that moment, Escher understood that empty space is not empty.

It is a form waiting to be discovered.

He understood that a line is not merely a boundary separating two things.

It may be a bridge through which everything is born from everything else.

He spent the entire day copying geometric patterns.

But the wall did not permit him to leave.

Whenever he closed his notebook, another page appeared.

Whenever he completed a drawing, he discovered that the drawing had begun drawing him.

Escher returned to the Alhambra fourteen years later.

He believed he had returned to complete what he had begun.

But he discovered that the first line was waiting for him in the same place.

The line had not aged.

The artist, however, carried fourteen years in his face and hands.

The line asked him:

Have you discovered where I end?

Escher replied:

You do not end.

The line said:

And you?

Escher did not answer.

For he realized that the human being may be only a brief line within a design greater than himself.

From that day forward, he no longer drew the world as it appeared.

He drew it as it doubted itself.

He made stairways ascend and descend at the same time.

He made the inside become the outside.

He made the hand draw the hand that was drawing it.

He was not searching for deception.

He was searching for the truth concealed behind what we call logical.

This is the power of the pencil.

A small instrument capable of dismantling the laws of space.

A gray line capable of constructing a city that gravity refuses to accept.

And a point capable of opening a door into infinity.

In this workshop, we will not merely learn how to draw what we see.

We will learn how to ask what we see whether it is real.

We will learn line control, proportion, shading, and perspective.

But we will also learn how to free the line from fear.

How to build an arch from a single curve.

A dome from a circle.

And an entire city from a trace of graphite upon white paper.

Place the pencil upon the page.

Do not ask yourself whether you are an artist.

Ask the line where it wishes to take you.

But be careful.

You may draw a door you cannot close.

And at the end of the line, you may find a person who resembles you.

Watching you from the other side of the page.

Waiting for years for you to begin.
