A STORY INSPIRED BY THE LIFE OF PAUL KLEE

DISCLAIMER

This text draws upon the real artist Paul Klee’s journey to Tunisia in 1914 and the profound transformation that North African light brought to his relationship with color.

The dialogue and scenes in the story are part of an imaginative literary interpretation created to explore the artist’s world, ideas, and legacy.

In the spring of 1914, Paul Klee arrived in Tunisia carrying a box of colors he did not yet know.

He had studied drawing for many years.

He knew how to make a precise line.

Yet he felt that color watched him from a distance, refusing to recognize him as a painter.

Upon his arrival, an official stopped him at the city gate.

He did not ask for his passport.

He asked him to declare the colors he carried.

Klee answered:

I carry blue, red, and yellow.

The official opened the box, then shook his head.

قال:

He said:

Those are the names of colors, not the colors themselves.

Klee asked:

What is the difference?

The official replied:

You will understand when the colors begin to question you.

Klee entered the city.

The walls were so white they seemed to erase everyone who passed before them.

The doors were blue, as though the sea had left its waves standing upon them.

The sun was not suspended in the sky.

It walked through the alleys, entered the houses, and rearranged things from within.

Klee sat before the town of Hammamet.

He placed the paper upon his knees.

He drew a line representing the city wall.

But the water carrying the pigment refused to remain within the line.

Blue escaped toward the sky.

Yellow flowed into the wall.

Red sat at the center of the page like a stranger waiting to remember his name.

Klee tried to correct the painting.

The paper said to him:

Who told you I had made a mistake?

Klee answered:

The water has crossed the boundaries.

The paper replied:

The boundaries were drawn by your pencil; they are not among the laws of water.

Klee looked at the town again.

He discovered that the houses were not merely buildings.

They were fields of light supporting one another so the sun would not fall.

The mosque was not a form separate from the town.

It was a quiet rhythm organizing the town’s relationship with the sky.

He painted a dome.

It dissolved into a blue square.

He painted a palm tree.

Its trunk became a line, and its branches became music that could not be heard.

He painted a window.

It did not open onto a street.

It opened into another color.

There, inside that color, Klee found himself waiting for him for years.

The man who resembled him asked:

Why are you late?

Klee replied:

I was learning how to paint things.

The man said:

Now you must learn to paint what things do to your soul.

Klee dipped his brush into the water.

When he lifted it, he found no water.

He found a small sky trembling among the bristles.

He placed it upon the paper.

The paper drank it.

Then it drank the wall.

It drank the palm tree, the town, and the distance between the eye and what it sees.

No landscape remained upon the page.

Only the feeling of the town remained.

Its warmth.

Its silence.

And that moment when light is no longer something we see, but something that sees us.

Then Paul Klee wrote the words that would remain with his name:

Color and I are one.

I am a painter.

He did not mean that he had mastered color.

He was confessing that color had taken possession of him.

This is watercolor.

It is not a color we command to remain in place.

It is a dialogue between intention and surprise.

Between a hand seeking control and water that knows another path.

In this workshop, we will not merely learn how to color objects.

We will learn how to listen to water.

How to let the paper breathe.

How to build light through transparent layers.

And how to leave space for the image to reveal what we never planned.

We will learn that the color which escapes may lead the painting toward its truth.

And that empty space is not an absence.

It is a place awaiting the arrival of light.

Place a drop of water upon the page.

Do not imprison it.

Watch it carry color somewhere you had never imagined.

You may begin by painting a city.

Then discover that the city was painting your memory.

You may place a single drop upon a white sheet.

But no one knows what sea may rise from it.
